Thailand :: Krabi :: Phi Phi Island

Admired throughout the world for its natural beauty, Phi Phi Island rivals Phuket as the most precious pearl in Southeast Asia. Turquoise wave, palm-fringed beaches and dazzling white sand are the visible magnificence, but the underwater world of Phi Phi is also unequalled in term of biological diversity and sheer spectacle. Phi Phi consists of two islands: the craggy, uninhabited Phi Phi Le, and the pristine Phi Phi Don. It is usually the latter we mean when we speak of Phi Phi Island. Phi Phi Don looks like a barbell with two limestone mountains joined by a narrow strip of land, creating two adjoining curving beaches. Phi Phi Le famed for the prehistoric paintings to be seen the the so-called "Viking Cave".

Kokood, Trad, Thailand เกาะกูด

Koh Kood Island, Trat, Thailand - The island is rather flat compared to Ko Chang with the highest mountain on the island, Khao Phaenth, measuring 315 metres. It has a good number of wonderful beaches with crystal clear water (Ta Pho Beach, Khlong Chao Beach, Thakian Beach, Phrao Beach etc.). Inland, the island is very wild with a lot of coconut and rubber tree plantations located in the plains. Most of the island inhabitants live off of the cultivation of coconut, rubber production or fishing. But meanwhile the expanding tourism industry gives more and more work to the less than 2,000 residents. The best time for a visit to Koh Kood is between beginning of November and the end of February.
At this time it is relatively cool, dry and mostly sunny. But until the end of May, when it is hotter than the cool season, a visit is still convenient. Even during monsoon season, Koh Kood is worth visiting for it doesnt rain every day and all day long. Activities on Koh Kood - Besides lazing on the beach, snorkeling at the beautiful coral reefs or just watching stars at night; visitors can also visit nearby islands for snorkeling and other activities.

Both attractions account for the bulk of Lampang's Thai and foreign visitors.
Wat Phra Kaeo Don TaoOn the right bank of Mae Nam Wang is an old building which consists of an impressive chedi on a rectangular base with a round spire topped with gilded bronze plaques. A Burmese - style chapel topped by tiered roofs stands against it. The chapel contains a Burmese style Buddha image with particularly interesting decorations. The chapel probable dates from the late 18th century. Beautiful colours and elaborate harmony make Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao one of Thailand's best examples of Burmese - style temples.
Wat Chedi Sao(Temple of Twenty Chedis) is also on the right bank of Mae Nam Wang, north of town. The temple is attractively set in an open ricefield. The complex is impressive with its Burmese - style bell - like spires.

Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang
Lies some 20 kilometers south of Lampang and is one of the North's finest temples. The chedi towers above surrounding trees. To the left of the chedi is a viharn with a carved wood fa?ade and double - level roofs. Harmonious proportions and exquisite interior decoration make Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang one of the best examples of Northern - style religious architecture.

Wat Phrathat Chom Ping is situated at Mu 5, Ban Chom Ping, Tambon Na Kaeo, Amphoe Ko Kha about 26 kms. south - west of Lampang provincial city. The unnatural happening of this temple is the shade of the pagoda reflexed on the floor of the convocation hall through the hole of its window, this similar event also happened at Wat Akkho Chai Khiri, Amphoe Chae Hom in Lampang.
The Elephant Conservation Centre is attached to the Veterinary Section of the Northern Timber Work Division of the Forestry Industry Organization and is the first centre in Thailand to train elephants for forest work.

The Center is located in Ban Tung Kiewn, Amphoe Hang Chat, on Lampang - Chiang Mai Highway 32 kms. from Lampang. At the center, the elephants's activities such as bathing, working, log pushing, etc. are held for show. In addition, the center has provided elephant riding tourist route.

Access to the park is possible by taking Lampang - Lamphun highway and branching off at Km. 47 for 18 kms., but the easiest way is by train to Khuntan station. The Doi Khuntan area was first explored early this century when German engineers were excavating Thailand's longest tunnel (some 1.3 kilometers) on the Bangkok - Chiang Mai railway line. The main trail climbs from Khuntan station to park headquarters and bungalows belonging to the State Railways, a missionary part and the Royal Forestry Department. Camping sites are also available ; campers must bring their own tents and the camping equipment.

Wat Sichum This monastery is situated on Lampang - Ngao Highway just passing the main entrance of Lampang Teacher's Training College and branching off at km. 601 on the left to this monastery. Its architecture is of Burmese arts having very sophisticated and beautiful wood carvings on the structure of the Vihara while gold gilded works are found on the walls, ceiling and big pillars in the Vihara, regarded as another exquisite graceful beauty of Burmese arts. Its is regrettable that the vihara's upper part which was made of wood was mostly damaged by fire. Only the carved - wood arch at the entrance has been left.

Kiu Lom Dam and Reservior It is located about 37 kms. from the township area on Lampang - Ngao Highway where a left turn is to be made at Km. 623 - 624 through another 14 kms. to the dam site. Another mean is from the private sector whose bungalows and pleasant raft tour are available for visitors who wish to explore natural surrounding.

Chao Pho Pratu Pha Shrine This shrine is located 50 kms. from Lampang township area on the right hand side of Lampang - Ngao Highway. It is a big spirit shrine housing the statue of Chao Pho Pratu Pha (The spirit ruling the area of Pratu Pha) highly revered by Lampang inhabitants. CHIANGRAI , THAILAND

Chiang Rai, the northernmost province of Thailand is about 785 kilometers north of Bangkok. Situated on the Kok River basin, Chiang Rai covers an area of approximately 11,678 square meters with an average elevation of 580 meters above sea level. The province, which is located within the renowned Golden Triangle area where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand converge, is also known as the gateway to Myanmar, Laos and Southern China.

Chiang Rai, which was founded in 1262 by King Meng Rai,was the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom (Kingdom of a million rice fields), which was later conquered by Burma. It was not until 1786 that Chiang Rai became a Thai territory and was proclaimed a province during the reign of King Rama VI in 1910.

Today, Chiang Rai is a travelers paradise endowed with abundant natural tourist attractions and antiquities; the province itself is evidence of past civilization. Attractions range from magnificent mountain scenery, ruins of ancient settlements, historic sites, Buddhist shrines and ethnic villages as the province is also home to several hill tribes who maintain fascinating lifestyles. For those interested in the natural side of Chiang Rai, jungle trekking is recommended along various trails.

Chiang Rai which tends to be a little more ’laid back’ now competes with Chiang Mai as a tourist attraction and is fast becoming a popular escape for tourists wanting to get away from the troubles they left behind.

NAN, THAILAND

A quiet and tranquil province, Nan nestles in a verdant valley in northern Thailand. About 668 kilometres from Bangkok, it covers an area of 11,472 square kilometres and is made up of the following districts: Mueang, Wiang Sa, Na Noi, Pua, Chiang Klang, Tha Wang Pha, Thung Chang, Mae Charim, Ban Luang, Na Mun, Santi Suk, Bo Kluea, Chaloem Phra Kiat, Song Khwae, and Phu Phiang.

The people of Nan descend from the Lan Changs (Laotians). Their forebears moved to settle around present-day Pua district which is rich in rock salt deposits, about 700 years ago at the time when Sukhothai was becoming the kingdom of the Thais. They subsequently moved south to the fertile Nan River basin which is much more extensive.

Nan's history is deeply involved with its neighbours, in particular Sukhothai which played an important role in both political and religious terms before Nan became a part of Lanna, Burma and Thailand in that order. Today Nan is still the home of numerous Thai Lue and other hilltribes who retain highly interesting customs and traditions.
